UK Construction Company Achieves Significant Carbon and Fuel Savings Using Ampd Energy’s Battery Energy Storage Systems

Firm cut more than 2,300 tonnes of CO2 and saves nearly 1 million litres of fuel

SINGAPORE, 09 Dec., 2024 — A leading UK construction company has made tremendous strides in reducing its carbon footprint and operational costs by switching from diesel generators to Ampd Energy’s Enertainer battery energy storage systems (ESS) on multiple construction sites. This transition is part of the firm’s broader strategy to meet its sustainability goals and move towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Over the past year, the construction firm integrated Enertainer units across several project sites, reducing both their carbon emissions and diesel fuel consumption. The switch to cleaner energy solutions resulted in a total savings of 2,365 tonnes of CO2 and 902,737 litres of diesel fuel between July 2023 and June 2024.

Traditionally, construction sites have relied heavily on diesel generators to power equipment such as cranes, hoists and other site infrastructure. However, the company recognised that diesel generators contribute to carbon emissions, high fuel costs and frequent maintenance requirements, hindering progress towards environmental and financial efficiency.

Seeking a reliable, more sustainable alternative, the company piloted Enertainer ESS units at a site in Sheffield, England. These battery-powered units, designed specifically for the construction industry, replaced conventional diesel generators used to power tower cranes and hoists. Within just two weeks, the company recorded 27 tonnes of CO2 savings — an immediate validation of the Enertainer’s potential.

The success at the pilot site led the construction company to expand the use of the Enertainer across other sites, using it to power not just cranes and hoists but also mast climbers, cabins and site supply.

The Ampd Enertainer is the first battery ESS built for the demands of construction sites. It provides a cleaner, quieter and more efficient power source compared to diesel generators. Each unit is powered by grid electricity, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Furthermore, the Enertainer requires no refueling or constant maintenance, unlike diesel generators that demand regular servicing and can pose fire hazards due to fuel handling.

Each Enertainer is equipped with Enernet, a carbon and fuel calculation engine that automatically tracks energy consumption and provides detailed monthly reports. These reports were instrumental in convincing the company’s site managers of the carbon and fuel savings achievable through the new technology.

The data from July 2023 to June 2024 highlights the following key results:

Total CO2 savings: 2,365 tonnes.
Total fuel savings: 902,737 litres of diesel fuel.
Estimated fuel cost savings: £1,110,366.
The fuel saved over this period is equivalent to powering more than 1 million daily work commutes for someone driving approximately 16 km each way in a car that achieves 17 km per litre.
