Battery Energy Storage Solution for a data center construction project
Background
Microsoft will invest A$5 billion in expanding its hyperscale cloud computing and AI infrastructure in Australia over the next two years – the single largest investment in its forty-year history in the country. This investment will also grow Microsoft’s local data center footprint from 20 sites to a total of 29 spread across Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney (Source: Microsoft).
Microsoft will ensure that its new data centers in Australia help meet the company’s sustainability goals of being carbon negative, water positive and zero waste by 2030. This includes using low-carbon materials during construction, as well as using renewable energy, advanced water-cooling features and measures to decrease diesel fuel use during operation (Source: Microsoft).

Introduction & Project Information
The Challenge
Kapitol Group was contracted to build the data center for Microsoft in Melbourne, Australia. The project has a significant reliance on temporary power from diesel generators to power on-site tower cranes, amenities and switchboards. To align with Microsoft’s commitment to sustainability, a cleaner and more efficient power solution was required.
The Solution
Kapital Group engaged Blue Diamond Machinery to assist with identifying low carbon equipment for use in the build, who in turn recommended Ampd Energy.
Ampd Energy is a leading manufacturer of advanced battery energy storage systems (ESS) that offers a cleaner, quieter, and more data-rich alternative to traditional diesel generators used on construction sites. By reducing or replacing the need for generators, the systems help to reduce carbon emissions, pollution, noise, cost and also down-time.
For the data center project, Ampd Energy deployed two Enertainers to power three tower cranes, drastically reducing the size of the diesel generators required onsite —from 3 units of 350 kVA down to a pair of 100 kVA units.
Results
The ESS systems significantly reduced diesel usage, saving an estimated 74,345 liters of diesel, which represents a 74% reduction in fuel consumption. This reduction in diesel consumption resulted in a total CO2 savings of approximately 125 metric tons, equating to a 57.8% reduction in carbon emissions. The implementation of the ESS solution led to a total cost reduction of 32%.
“The Ampd Enertainer is transforming power solutions on construction sites, delivering real savings while slashing both tailpipe and noise pollution. By reducing reliance on traditional generators, this battery system not only supports Microsoft's net-zero goals but also provides a more resilient and reliable power source. Even in the event of a diesel generator shutdown, the stored energy ensures continuous operation, keeping projects on track and reducing downtime.”
